Carrier choice between EPON and GPON


Background: discussion about “EPON or GPON?” is hot and interesting in different countries or different telecom vendors.

Mr Fujimoto from NTT talked about the features and difference between EPON/GEPON and GPON application situations, and which one would be the best choice for NTT, or even Japan telecom market.

Which is the answer?

Though GPON’s higher 1.25/2.5G up/downlink bandwidth, attracting more and more telecom carriers and many ISP, also data and trends from ftth area indicate higher growth in GPON.

But EPON has better IOT(Interoperability Test) application at current stage, with rich suppliers/manufacturers resource and more mature “triple play” and “EPON+EoC” solution commercial cases.Furthermore, GEPON solution have better quotation at the same time.


Gigabit PON (GPON) standard formulated from the ITU/FSAN,and the other is Ethernet PON (EPON) standards developed by the IEEE 802.3ah working group.
