Great people in telecom history

Great telecom scientist myself most loved

Just finished the public holiday in China, is Qingming or Ching Ming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day in English, is one of most traditional Chinese festival, especially in southern area.

The festival is called literally “Pure Brightness Festival” or “Clear and Bright Festival.”

As shown, burn incense and offer sacrifices at the graves of one’s ancestors on “Qingming”.  The name suggests a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of springtime (“treading on the greenery”), but it is mostly noted for it connection with Chinese ancestral veneration and the tending of family graves.

As in telecom and related science fields, there are many great scientists, innovators or ancestors to remember and to love, right at this moment. Most importantly, some of them are still offering contributions to our society currently. Following are myself idols in fiber optics, telecom fields.

“First telephone’s inventor”

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell (March 3, 1847 – August 2, 1922) was an eminent Scottish-born scientist, inventor, engineer and innovator who is credited with inventing the first practical telephone.

Many other inventions marked Bell’s later life, including groundbreaking work in optical telecommunications, hydrofoils and aeronautics. In 1888, Bell became one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society.

“Father of telegraph”

Guglielmo Marconi

Guglielmo Marconi

Guglielmo Marconi, known for his pioneering work on long-distance radio transmission and for his development of Marconi’s law and a radio telegraph system.

“Electric and magnetic ancestor”

James Clerk Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell

James Clerk Maxwell, who demonstrated that electric and magnetic fields travel through space as waves moving at the speed of light. Maxwell proposed that light is an undulation in the same medium that is the cause of electric and magnetic phenomena.

Computer science (artificial intelligence) = Turing?

Do you know him? Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence.

“Father of Fiber Optics and FTTx” (live in US currently)

Charles K. Kao (live in US currently)

Charles K. Kao (live in US currently)

The Honourable Dr. Gao Kun, pioneered in the development and use of fiber optics in telecommunications. Kao, known as the “Godfather of Broadband”, “Father of Fiber Optics”, or “Father of Fiber Optic Communications”

Sharing a classical optical fiber video from youtube.

At last, let’s borrow a famous  sentence from Dr. Gao (Godfather of Broadband): “I can’t think of anything that can replace fiber optics“…
