Two main technical approaches to delivering FTTH

“The evolution of fibre to the home (FTTH) technology is a key issue for the telecom industry.”

Bandwidth demand and your FTTH solutions

Operators need to consider today which optical access platform will allow them to adapt most costeffectively and intelligently as future bandwidth demand and applications evolve. And, as the massive deployment of FTTH networks continues worldwide, operators expect more from FTTH based technologies. They expect next-generation technologies to enhance bandwidth and service support capabilities while supporting coexistence with their existing equipment and outside plant.

Besides two main flavours of PON (GEPON and GPON) to choose, There are two main types of FTTH topologies exist. FOT Blog today is sharing two main technical approaches to delivering FTTH:

Point-to-Point ultra broadband internet

A point-to-point Ethernet network provides each user with a dedicated optical channel. Typical deployments of point-to-point Ethernet FTTH use 100BASE-BX or 1000BASE-BX single-mode single fiber connections in a star architecture. In these networks, dedicated fibers from customer residences (individual apartments or multidwelling units) terminate at an Ethernet switch in the central office.

P2P ONU terminal is designed to deliver ultra broadband internet data access, high quality voice over IP telephony and full-spectrum CATV services for Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) access network, this products are basing on the stable and mature fast Ethernet or gigabit Ethernet technology, which has high performance/price ratio, and the technology of Layer 2 Ethernet switch, capability include integrated CATV and the technology of high quality VOIP as well.

It has a WAN port of 100M fiber Fast Ethernet or 1000M fiber Gigabit Ethernet, and at user side, it provides 4x Gigabit Ethernet LAN port, optional CATV receiver, optional VOIP module and optional Wi-Fi module. It is highly reliable and easy to maintain, with guaranteed QoS.

Point-to-Multipoint high bandwidth service

However, the passive optical network (PON), which provides point-to-multipoint connectivity, has become increasingly popular because it enables operators to make more efficient use of their optical fibre infrastructure.

FTTH P2MP((point to multi-point) PON fiber solution

A typical FTTH PON architectures support an Ethernet connection over a specific PON protocol standard. A single fiber from a central office optical line terminal (OLT) is connected to optical network terminals (ONTs) or optical network units (ONUs) at customer premises. An ONT device is usually located at an individual end-user residence, where an ONU device may be located in a basement of a multi-dwelling unit and be shared by a small number of users at that site.

Two flavours of PON exist: Ethernet PON (EPON) and Gigabit PON (GPON)

The most common PON standards in current use are EPON/GEPON (based on IEEE 802.3ah) and GPON (ITU-T G.984). The EPON/GEPON standard uses Gigabit Ethernet with symmetric speeds downstream and upstream. GPON was developed to provide higher downstream speeds than upstream.
PON has been widely deployed around the world. In Europe, early adopters and smaller operators have installed point-to-point Ethernet networks, but GPON is rapidly becoming the preferred choice among major operators. GPON is already the dominant technology choice in North America. Asia saw significant EPON deployments in Japan and South Korea, and China – the world’s largest FTTH market – recently embarked on a large-scale deployment using a mix of EPON and GPON.
Many Committees, agents and vendors will consider the optimum evolutionary path of FTTH-based technologies within the framework of next-generation PON, and the applications that will drive this evolution.
