What’s special about DOCSIS 3.1?

“DOCSIS 3.1 brings nearly a 100x increase in the average data rate to the home, this will eventually give consumers streaming content, such as Netflix, the kind of bandwidth needed to stream Ultra HD content to multiple screens and download an entire 14 GB digital movie in less than two minutes.”

What is DOCSIS?

DOCSIS: Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification.

  • Allow Cable companies to mix and match vendor equipment at Head End and Customer Premises
  • Create competition and pricing pressure among equipment vendors
  • Share engineering costs

What’s special about DOCSIS 3.1?

Highlights of DOCSIS 3.1
DOCSIS 3.1 created with high capacity goals to satisfy subscriber BW demands deep into the 2020 decade
– 10+ Gbps Downstream
– 2+ Gbps Upstream
DOCSIS 3.1 substantially increases the performance of HFC networks via
– DS Spectrum expansion
– US Spectrum expansion
– Modem PHY – LDPC
– High modulation orders
– Simultaneously support legacy SC-QAM channels and OFDM channels
– Possibility of bonding SC-QAM and OFDM
– Upstream spectral multiplexing
– Legacy SC-QAM able to be time multiplexed

DOCSIS 3.1 is 25 percent more efficient than earlier versions of DOCSIS, enabling operators to offer more services and new content to their customers. The update widens the bandwidth pipe and adds hundreds more megabits of throughput without making any changes to the network. Perhaps more importantly, the new standard results in higher capacity to networks that were already fully tapped.

  • Efficient support of 10+ Gbps of downstream and 1+ Gbps of upstream capacity.
Significant cost per bit reduction relative to a DOCSIS 3.0 based solution.
  • Adaptation to different amounts of spectrum and plant conditions
  • An effective migration strategy
  • Operates on existing HFC networks and actives

Meanwhile, industry standards-setting body CableLabs is working behind the scenes to test the interoperability of cable equipment running on DOCSIS 3.1, with hardware certifications happening later this year and deployments expected to pick up steam near future.

What kinds of cable broadband application will come?

“In June 2015, Broadcom demonstrated a DOCSIS 3.1 cable set-top box (STB) reference design with Wi-Fi, which combines data delivery at speeds of up to 5 Gbps, support for 4K/Ultra HD video decoding and multi-Gigabit Wi-Fi home networking.”

Cable operators are gearing up for a massive broadband boost, one that will give its bandwidth-hungry customers what they’ve been asking for:

  • high-speed downloads
  • seamless over-the-top streaming content on multiple devices
  • real-time interactive gaming
  • whole-home services such as remote monitoring and automation.

The upgrade to multi gigabit cable broadband means more robust cable performance and a clear path to Ultra HD content while future-proofing the cable networks that will deliver all of that pixel-dense content to consumers’ homes.
