Optical distribution network (ODN), the physical fibre and optical devices that distribute signals to users in a telecommunications network.
Actually, in most of the network structure diagram, or fiber network project infrastructure design, we just simply see the ODN characters only. In some fiber telecom document, there was no enough information to describe this detail passive optical distribution system inside, even including our main internet pedia.

Optical Consolidation rack
The Optical Consolidation Rack (OCR), which also called Racks or Rack Mounted, is designed for use in the exchange for the splicing of network fibres to pre-connectorised cables, for direct connection to the active equipment.
The Aggregation Node (marked in “what is ODN network” picture) is like a concentrator for fibre from the exchange to cabinets and to direct FTTH/P. The rest are simply sub splitters to distribute teh fibre closer to the neighbourhood, ready for fibre to connect to the houses or networks.
The Fiber Optic Splitter, also named beam splitter, is based on a quartz substrate of integrated waveguide optical power distribution device, the same as coaxial cable transmission system.
ODN system offers various distribution point in fiber distribution cabinets, fiber management, and optical splitter and so on.
Generally speaking, fiber optic cable management usually starts from manifolds, duplexers and breakout boxes for fiber optic cable patching and termination.
The manifolds jointers offer rugged protection and bifurcation of multi-fiber cable into, for example, either 3mm or 5mm Miniflex protection tubing.

Blown fiber tubing
Blown fiber tubing, air-blown fibre is a method of installing fibre optic cables that relies on the flow of compressed air easing the fibre all the way to its destination – sometimes 1km away.
Key ideas to follow:
- Choosing the appropriate wavelength
- Using appropriate transceivers ( SFP+ , XFP etc.)
- Calculate the total ODN loss (transmission loss, insertion loss etc)
